dotty hippo design is celebrating 12 years in business. In August 2009, I took the leap to start up my own graphic design business and I have never looked back. I cannot believe it was 12 years ago and I know it is a cliché, but it really does seem like yesterday.
I wanted to write a blog to look back and reflect on my journey.
The beginning
Going from an employee to self-employed was scary and a huge step. I have always worked in graphic design specifically print design for magazines and enjoyed the work and being part of a team. Setting up on my own was a massive change for me and it was daunting, but I had a lot of support from family and friends which really helped me.
There are so many things to consider when setting up your own business and it is a lot more stressful dealing with the ups and downs of running your own business, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I have learned so much over the years and when I look back, I am so proud of what I have achieved. From creating my own website, working with clients and fab projects to winning awards and setting up my own networking group. I have also built and established great business relationships and friendships with other local business owners who I know that I can rely on and trust.
The journey
I’m not going to deny that it’s tough being a business owner as it is not a 9-5 job. It can be hard to switch off at the end of the day, but the benefits and rewards make it worthwhile. While it may seem that you are always working, that can also be a positive as the flexibility is a plus point for sure. I control my own timetable especially as I am also a fitness instructor and personal trainer and it can be a juggle at times, but I can honestly say that I don’t think I would have it any other way.
I think it’s important to look back every now and then and remember the achievements (big and small) as running your own business is a roller coaster and the positives can sometimes get forgotten.
2020 has shown how quickly things can change and it has been so tough for businesses. It has meant dealing with different challenges and adapting and evolving and resulting in changes for many. I have been lucky to have had fantastic support from my family and I don’t think I would have got through it without them. Having weekly Zoom catchups with my networking group has also been a great help with the support, advice, laughter, and friendships that have been made.
The future
It has been lovely to see businesses getting back on track and new businesses launching and I was lucky enough to have projects on the go for a lot of last year. I’m looking forward to getting the business back on track and moving forward and
I love that every client project is different, and it always makes me smile when I have done a good job, and the client is happy and gives such lovely feedback. I am so lucky to be doing a job that I love and while we cannot predict what the future may hold, I am excited to see what the future is for dotty hippo design.
Thank you to all the clients that I have worked with over the last 12 years, and I look forward to continuing working with you.
